inContAlert publication awarded Best Paper of EJIS 2024
The inContAlert research paper "Designing a wearable IoT-based bladder level monitoring system for neurogenic bladder patients" has been named the best contribution of the 2024 volume of the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS). The award comes with the Stafford Beer Medal of the British OR Society for the author team, consisting of Dr. Claudius Jonas, Dr. Jannik Lockl, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger, and Dr. Robin Weidlich.
EJIS is part of the Senior Scholars' Basket of Eight, the selection of the eight leading journals in information systems. The Stafford Beer Medal is awarded there annually for the most outstanding contribution to the philosophy, theory, or practice of information systems. It is named after the cyberneticist Stafford Beer, president of the OR Society from 1970 to 1971.
The study develops and evaluates a wearable system based on the Internet of Things that captures bladder filling levels non-invasively and in real time. The prototype reliably estimates the filling level and securely transmits the data to a mobile application. The work thereby demonstrates the technical feasibility and the user-centered design of a connected wearable for bladder management, paving the way for personalized, real-time urological care.
The judges praised the paper as an excellent example of information systems researchers tackling a real-world problem and delivering a solution that can directly enhance patients' health and well-being. They see it as a foundation for future wearable IoT-based systems for monitoring physiological parameters.
